Cell Phones

Posted Thursday, May 17th, 2012 by lkowalski

Cell phone use by students during school hours is against school board policy. Students ARE NOT to be using their cell phones on school property or at school sponsored events. This will include the dance, picnic, etc. Severe consequences will be issued to students who do not adhere to these rules. Cell phones need to be turned off and locked in your locker.

Lunch Deliveries

Posted Thursday, March 22nd, 2012 by lkowalski

Students MAY NOT have lunch delivered to them by anyone other than a parent. This includes Jimmy Johns, etc. Those making a lunch delivery to a student will not be allowed into the building.

Important Information

I have a couple of items would like to address as the end of the year approaches and the weather gets warmer:

1. Student dress code must be adhered to our students will be asked to change clothing or remain in the office until they do so. Shorts and skirts must be fingertip length when arms are held along the thigh, no strapless shirts or spaghetti straps may be worn, and pants must be worn at the waist. If you have questions about what your student may be wearing to school please call, email or refer to the Keller Parent/student handbook.

2. NO cologne of any type is allowed at school due to student allergies. Students will be asked to take these items home and if they do not they will be confiscated.

3. NO beverages may be brought into the building or consumed at any time other than lunch. All food must be finished during the lunch period. Items unfinished will be thrown out in the lunchroom garbage can.

Please let me know at any time if you have questions.

We appreciate your support her at Keller.

Great Resource

Posted Friday, March 9th, 2012 by bloduha

Good Afternoon,

The Department of Student Learning would like to share information on the Khan Academy as a valuable complementary resource to support core instruction.

Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org) was started by Salman Khan, and began as a series of YouTube tutoring videos to support family members with their learning of math. Through feedback, Sal was asked to develop additional videos outlining concepts related to math and science. Still posted on YouTube, Sal has organized the videos through the Khan Academy website to cover K-12 math, science topics such as biology, chemistry, and physics, and even reaches into the humanities with videos on finance and history. The videos are free to access and are approximately 10 to 20 minutes long. Khan Academy is a resource that can be used to provide students with a visual representation of content introduced during Share Instruction from Everyday Mathematics, Pre-Transition/Transition Mathematics, and the junior high core programs.

Using think-alouds the narrator models a specific concept or idea for students. During the course of the video appropriate vocabulary and strategies are used to reinforce the concept. After concluding a video students have an opportunity to practice the concept using the “Practice this concept” portion of the site. During practice students are asked to complete 10 problems related to the video they just observed. If a student incorrectly answers a problem they are provided corrective feedback and given an opportunity to check their work making necessary corrections. If students become stuck on a concept they have the option of reviewing the video to develop a better understanding of the concept.

This is a fabulous FREE resource.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Enjoy your weekend and don’t forget to turn your clock ahead one hour Saturday night!

After School Events Policy

Posted Wednesday, January 25th, 2012 by bloduha

Regarding after school events and activities:

  • All students attending must have called home to let parents know they are staying BEFORE the end of the day. Students may not use the hall or office phone to call home at 2:15. Previous arrangements must be made.
  • Students must be with their respective after school event no later than 2:20. If they are not they will be escorted from the building if they are walkers or asked to wait in the office for the late bus if they are a bus rider.
  • Students attending sporting events will be completing homework in the science rooms until 2:45 at which time they will be escorted by chaperones to the gym.
  • Staff members requesting students to stay after school and/or sponsoring an after school activity are responsible for student supervision and exit from the building.
  • NO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS may attend after school activities or sporting events unless they are with an adult.
  • NO KELLER STUDENT may stay at an after school event later than 3:50 unless they are with an adult.

Any student not following these procedures or adhering to the Wildcat Ways may not be able to attend future after school activities.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Keller News

This week standardized test results were officially released by the Illinois State Board of Education. These results indicate Keller is making significant gains, along with District 54, in ensuring ALL students meet and/or exceed state standards. As a matter of fact, District 54 achieved the School Board of Education goal having 90% of all students meet/exceed state standards in reading and math! These substantial gains are noteworthy and I would like to take just a minute to review Keller’s progress with you.  Click here for more info
