Good Afternoon,
The Department of Student Learning would like to share information on the Khan Academy as a valuable complementary resource to support core instruction.
Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org) was started by Salman Khan, and began as a series of YouTube tutoring videos to support family members with their learning of math. Through feedback, Sal was asked to develop additional videos outlining concepts related to math and science. Still posted on YouTube, Sal has organized the videos through the Khan Academy website to cover K-12 math, science topics such as biology, chemistry, and physics, and even reaches into the humanities with videos on finance and history. The videos are free to access and are approximately 10 to 20 minutes long. Khan Academy is a resource that can be used to provide students with a visual representation of content introduced during Share Instruction from Everyday Mathematics, Pre-Transition/Transition Mathematics, and the junior high core programs.
Using think-alouds the narrator models a specific concept or idea for students. During the course of the video appropriate vocabulary and strategies are used to reinforce the concept. After concluding a video students have an opportunity to practice the concept using the “Practice this concept” portion of the site. During practice students are asked to complete 10 problems related to the video they just observed. If a student incorrectly answers a problem they are provided corrective feedback and given an opportunity to check their work making necessary corrections. If students become stuck on a concept they have the option of reviewing the video to develop a better understanding of the concept.
This is a fabulous FREE resource.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Enjoy your weekend and don’t forget to turn your clock ahead one hour Saturday night!
