March 15, 2024

Dear Keller Families,

I hope this email finds you doing well and ready for the weekend.  Later this morning we are excited to partner with Special Olympics and host the Polar Plunge event on Friday, March 15th.  The Polar Plunge is a fundraising event that supports Special Olympic Illinois athletes across the state, helping to provide them with life-changing programming. We will have an assembly this morning that will celebrate this event!  At the moment, over $25,000 has been fundraised to support Special Olympics.  As of March 15th, our amount raised, is the highest of any junior high in the state!!!!  Stay tuned for updates on our final amount raised and for Special Olympics.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our front office staff or me.  Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and support and we will work “TOGETHER AS ONE” to ensure the success of our students.

Regards,

Tom Barbini

Illinois Youth Survey

On Monday, March 18th, our 8th grade students will be taking the Illinois Youth Survey (IYS).  The purpose of the IYS is to better understand youth attitudes and behaviors that can impact student problems and academic success.  It asks about topics like nutrition, physical activity, bullying, school climate, and alcohol and other drug use.  Students will be asked to complete a survey (with no names or identification numbers) that will be confidentially administered during one class period. The survey is completely voluntary and privacy will be strictly protected.  For more information, please visit the Illinois Youth Survey website at http://iys.cprd.illinois.edu.

The links below are to a notification form officially informing you that the survey is being conducted at Keller. This form will allow you to exclude your child from participation and only needs to be returned if you do not want your child to participate.

Solar Eclipse Event on April 8th

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North and Central America creating a path of totality.  During a total solar eclipse, the Moon completely blocks the Sun while it passes between the Sun and Earth.  The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.  For more information, please visit science.nasa.gov.

The Schaumburg area will not experience a total eclipse but rather a partial eclipse around 1:50-2:10 p.m.  Keller Junior High is planning a viewing opportunity to allow students to experience this unique event.

Safety is always a top priority.  We will take all precautionary measures to make this experience safe and enjoyable.  It is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing (Eclipse safety).  Solar eclipse glasses will be provided for all students and staff participating in the viewing on April 8, 2024.  Additionally, if you would prefer to not have your child participate in this event, please let us know by Monday, April 1, 2024. Students who do not participate in the solar eclipse event will participate in an alternate activity inside the school during the eclipse.

We look forward to this peak learning moment with our students.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
